University of Victoria

Medical Undergraduate Program

UBC's innovative distributed MD Undergraduate Program offers education and clinical training at four distinct sites across BC:
  • The Vancouver-Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) based at the UBC campus in Vancouver;
  • the Southern Medical Program (SMP) based at the UBC campus in the Okanagan;
  • the Island Medical Program (IMP) delivered in collaboration with University of Victoria;
  • and the Northern Medical Program (NMP) delivered in collaboration with University of Northern British Columbia.
Look at the UBC MD Undergraduate Viewbook for more information about our unique program.
Students at all 4 sites share the same curriculum, and are admitted to the UBC MD Undergraduate Program by the UBC Faculty of Medicine Admissions office. All students receive a UBC medical degree. Students in the IMP, NMP and SMP have affiliate status at their home institution.

Medical education and training for students and residents is provided at hospital and clinical sites around BC as well as at the three universities. It involves several thousand clinical teachers who balance their own medical practices with providing clinical training and mentorship.  The UBC distributed medical education program is the first distributed medical education program in Canada, designed to fully train students in communities across BC, where they may one day practice.
Technology is a key component in the delivery of distributed medical education. Each university campus, clinical academic campus and affiliated regional centre is equipped with videoconferencing technology, linking all four universities and teaching hospitals. This allows faculty members to conduct teaching sessions with medical students and residents from any of these locations across the province. Students at all sites share interactive, simultaneous classes, connected by some of the most advanced audio-visual technology in the world.
